Call For Proposals
The University Diversity Committee (UDC) invites proposals for Diversity Research Initiative Grants. The awards will be $4,000 maximum per grant. These awards will support:
Development of new courses and innovative course revisions that make a contribution to improve diversity in the curriculum and to facilitate the integration of diversity into the classroom.
Research or activity that has direct campus-wide or community impact and that attempts to achieve a campus community that reflects the diversity of the society in which we live, and identify and eliminate obstacles in the areas of hiring, retention, development and promotion of faculty, staff, and administrators.
Students in diversity related initiatives having direct campus-wide or community impact, to increase students' active participation in diversity-related events or courses on campus.
Proposals for the 2007-2008 academic year must be submitted no later than May 1, 2007. Grant recipients will be required to submit a final report upon project completion but no later than twelve months from receipt of the award. Final reports will be published on the UDC home page.

PURPOSE
The purpose of the grant program is to support faculty/staff research that explores diversity on campus and that will help achieve the goals stated in the CSUSB Strategic Plan for Diversity:
"As a university we will collectively provide a forum for the exploration of cultural and racial diversity as an essential aspect of the educational experience; we will serve as the place to expose students and the community to a variety of cultures and international perspectives in order to adequately prepare for the twenty-first century; we will stress the importance of educating for social responsibility; we will provide educational access for historically under-represented populations; and we will promote the understanding of diversity as a means for all of us to prosper together."
Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the vision statement of the CSUSB Strategic Plan for Diversity prior to submitting proposals.

ELIGIBILITY
Any CSUSB full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty or permanent staff member is eligible to submit a proposal. Group projects (a group of faculty, a department, a faculty and/or staff association, and partnerships with the community) are strongly encouraged.
GRANT CATEGORIES
- CATEGORY A - Exploring and Improving Diversity across the Curriculum
Amount: $4,000 maximum
Purpose: support the development of new courses and innovative course revisions that make a contribution to improve diversity in the curriculum and to facilitate the integration of diversity into the classroom. Projects must address the goal of substantially enhancing student awareness of diversity and multicultural issues. Proposals for a new course must describe how it will fit into the current curriculum structure.
- CATEGORY B - Research and other Diversity-Related Activity
Amount : $4,000maximum
Purpose: research or activity that has direct campus-wide or community impact and that attempts to achieve a campus community that reflects the diversity of the society in which we live, and identify and eliminate obstacles in the areas of hiring, retention, development and promotion of faculty, staff, and administrators. Examples include:
- developing methods for broadening the participation and retention of underrepresented groups in higher education.
- conducting diversity-related surveys or local community studies
- developing methods for promoting or sustaining cultural and racial diversity
- conducting diversity policy studies at the federal, state, or institutional level
- developing methods for diversity assessment and other diversity-related research activities
- attending a national diversity conference or workshop and later disseminating materials that contribute to improving CSUSB diversity training programs
- establishing a train-the-trainer diversity training model
- organizing workshops or seminars on employee equity related topics
- CATEGORY C - Individual or Group Student Initiative Grant
Amount: $4,000 maximum
Purpose: to support students in diversity related initiatives having direct campus-wide or community impact, to increase students' active participation in diversity-related events or courses on campus. The stated amount is available on a one grant per project basis. Examples of such initiatives include, but are not limited to:
- developing methods for promoting or sustaining all aspects of diversity, including: race, sexual orientation, age, gender, etc.
- designing tools to increase a supportive climate for members of diverse backgrounds
- conducting diversity-related surveys or local community studies
- developing outreach programs with local high schools to bring members of underrepresented communities onto the campus
- developing a consortium with local community colleges and the community to enable communication and outreach to prospective underrepresented students.
Requirements:
- Applicant must have a CSUSB G.P.A. of at least 2.8.
- Applicant must have a declared major.
- Applicant must have completed at least 75 units (typically equivalent to the last quarter of the sophomore year).
- Applicant must have two letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from a CSUSB faculty or staff member.
- All applicants must have a faculty or staff member as the project advisor. If help is needed in finding an advisor, please contact the UDC.
- All projects must include some form of evaluation or assessment.
- All projects must be finished and presented to the UDC within three academic quarters.

PROCEDURE
APPLICATION
- PROJECT DESCRIPTION - The description is limited to 4 pages (must be typed and double-spaced) and must address the following points:
- Program Goals and Objectives - What do you intend to accomplish? How will the project address the key goal?
- Methods - What methods will you use to accomplish these goals and objectives? What are the steps taken to achieve the desired results?
- Evaluation - Who will be performing the evaluation? How will you know if you have accomplished your goals and objectives? What evaluation methods or tools will you use to evaluate the project and its outcomes?
- Dissemination -How will the project's results be disseminated?
- Timeline - What is the timeline of the project?
- Budget - Submit itemized and detailed account of your proposed budget.
REVIEW CRITERIA:
Proposals will be reviewed using the following criteria:
- Significance of the needs addressed
- Linkage to key purposes of the grant program
- Quality of project design including objectives, methods, evaluation, and dissemination plans.
HOW TO SUBMIT PROPOSALS:
A complete proposal consists of: Cover Sheet, Project Description, and Diversity Initiative Grant Request for Funding Form (NOTE: Category C applicants must also include two Letters of Recommendation). Three copies of the finished proposal and an electronic copy (i.e. on a disk) saved as a Microsoft Word document must be submitted to Undergraduate Studies, UH 352, no later than 4:00 pm on May 1, 2007. Late or unfinished proposals will not be considered.
